Lithuania Bolsters Defence Arsenal with 36 American Missiles Worth $100M

In a strategic move, Lithuania has secured a deal to acquire 36 cutting-edge “AIM-120C-8” (AMRAAM) medium-range missiles from the United States, valued at more than 94 million euros (100 million dollars). This announcement comes from the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, and it’s poised to significantly enhance Lithuania’s military capabilities.

But that’s not all; the price tag includes not only the missiles but also the essential equipment required for their deployment. These AMRAAM missiles are designed to work seamlessly with the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), a high-tech air defense system.

So, what’s the big deal? These missiles are more than just tools of defense; they represent a quantum leap in Lithuania’s ability to conduct self-defense operations and regional security missions. Furthermore, they’ll deepen Lithuania’s collaboration with the United States and its NATO allies.

However, it’s important to note that while these advanced weapons will bolster Lithuania’s defenses, they won’t upset the overall military equilibrium in the region. Instead, they’ll add an extra layer of security and collaboration in the Baltic region.

Lithuania initially introduced the NASAMS system in late 2020, and this year marks the commencement of the second phase of acquiring this state-of-the-art technology. The decision to invest in this advanced defense infrastructure underscores Lithuania’s commitment to ensuring regional stability and security.

Additionally, Lithuania’s initiative isn’t limited to just its own borders. The country has also taken a significant step in supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts by purchasing NASAMS launchers. These moves reflect a broader commitment to regional defense and international cooperation.

So, as Lithuania continues to invest in advanced defense technology, it not only strengthens its own security but also contributes to the broader goal of safeguarding peace and stability in the Baltic region and beyond.
