Company and Executives Found Guilty for Environmental Damage in Curonian Spit National Park
In a recent ruling, the Klaipėda Regional Court in Lithuania found the company “Akordas 1” and two of its executives, Gintautas Matulevičius and Mindaugas Karpičius, guilty of environmental pollution and damage to the Curonian Spit National Park. As a result, they have been ordered to pay substantial fines and compensation.
The court determined that “Akordas 1” and its top executives were responsible for causing harm to the environment and destruction of protected areas within the Curonian Spit National Park. However, the court decided to acquit them of charges of abusing their official positions, citing a lack of evidence indicating actions that met the criteria for such a crime.
Gintautas Matulevičius, one of the accused executives, has been ordered to pay a fine of 25,000 euros, while Mindaugas Karpičius, the other executive, has been fined 20,000 euros. The company “Akordas 1” will face a hefty fine of 50,000 euros.
Additionally, the court has ordered “Akordas 1” to compensate the state for the environmental damage, amounting to 4,860,000 euros.
It’s worth noting that both the executives and the company denied any wrongdoing throughout the legal proceedings.
The case highlights the significance of preserving and protecting sensitive natural areas like the Curonian Spit National Park, which is known for its unique biodiversity and ecological value. Legal actions such as this serve as a reminder of the responsibilities held by companies and their leaders to ensure the conservation of our environment and adhere to environmental regulations.
